HOW TO GET YOUR BOOK OUT THERE, PART TWO:
Using the Web… Social Media, On-line Promotion, Podcasts, &
Security Issues
Introduction
In case anyone hasn’t noticed, the traditional book business is in trouble. Reports have sales down some 20 to 30% at all retail chains. Many independent book stores have closed their doors. What are authors to do? What can we do? Wait, what about the Internet with assorted marketing opportunities – the question every author wants to know the answer to is, how can we harness this powerful tool? Let’s start by listening to the experts.
1:00 PM: PODCASTS: What They Are, How They Work, And How To Make One by Peter Ward
Have you listened to a Podcast yet? Maybe you subscribe to one on a regular basis. Have you thought about how you, as an author, can make use of this Internet technology to promote your book(s)? Among the most interesting web tools around, podcasts are available on all sorts of topics. Learn what they are and where they can be found. Library Director, and author interviewer Peter Ward will discuss his author interview program, how it was created and what is involved. He’ll take you through the Podcast creation process and reveal how you too might be able to create one.
Peter Ward is currently the Director of the Lindenhurst Memorial Public Library. Before that, he was the Director at the Smithtown Library (1998-2006) and Director of the East Islip Public Library (1997-1998). He started the Podcast program a couple of years back, converting the audio on-demand program to Podcasts. Peter is not only the Library Director, he is also an experienced interviewer having interviewed many local authors and poets. Peter combines a keen intellectual ability, the practical technical skills and computer software experience into a successful and creative program.
2 PM: THE ONLINE BOOK CAMPAIGN: Social Media, Online Promotion &
More by P J Campbell
It isn’t just the book stores that are being squeezed, with the estimated 300,000 new book titles released each year, how can “today’s author” be noticed or compete for the attention of the shrinking book buyer’s market? It is a question all writers ultimately ask themselves. Social media relationships, online book promotion and publicity are essential components for every author who wants to reach their audience. Publishing insider PJ Campbell will share her strategies for creating a successful online book campaign.
PJ Campbell, is the Director of Events for a major, global trade publisher and an authority in the creation of successful book campaigns through author appearances. Joe Giaquinto
Are you interested in promoting yourself on the Web? Are you anxious to share all those wonderful passions you have about writing with the rest of the world? Are you planning on posting personal glimpses of your life and family, including photos of loved ones, social gatherings or your most recent vacation? Before you bare your soul on Facebook and Twitter, there are some common sense security measures meant to protect your family and your business, and keep you free of stalkers, identity thieves and online predators.
Computer consultant Joe Giaquinto will discuss valuable tips for surfing the Web safely. You will find out how to safeguard against threats such as hackers, spam, virus attacks, spyware programs and email phishing. You will learn about the risks associated with using a public profile on your social networking site. And you will hear about tools that protect your online privacy while enabling people with legitimate requests to reach you.
Joe is owner of Teach Me PC.net, a computer consulting practice he started in California in 1996 to meet the need for specialized computer services. His company offers computer training workshops and customized software applications for corporations and individuals which help people increase their personal productivity. As the World Wide Web grew in popularity for both business and private use, Joe expanded his services to include website design and computer training for web applications.
Throughout his life, Joe has been gifted with a special sensitivity to paranormal phenomena. Returning to Long Island in 2003, he discovered many people were interested in learning about this subject so he created the research group, GHLI. Joe has been a guest speaker at the Huntington Historical Society, the Ward Melville Heritage Organization, the Hampton Bays Historical and Preservation Society and at private business establishments where he lectures about his current research and does spiritual readings for groups and individuals.
