In
2013, two Long Island high schools were chosen and high
school seniors were asked to enter the 500-700 word
contest with the writing theme, What Long Island
personality, past or present, living or deceased, has
most affected your life and your life's mission?
The
2013 winners, selected by a judging panel of authors
among the Long Island Authors Group, were from two high
schools in the Bellmore-Merrick School District.
Four
students received Honorable Mention while First Place
went to senior Sarah Steil, from Sanford H. Calhoun High
School for her moving essay about her grandfather and
Second Place was awarded to senior Stephanie Vogel from
John F. Kennedy High School.
Dorothy
McPartland, the LIAG President in 2013 describes the
Literary Award contest as remarkable, "We are proud
to encourage the next generation of Long Island
writers." Kim
Serpe, English District Chair at Calhoun HS, expressed
her gratitude for the award, which recognizes the
efforts of high school students to achieve high
standards in their writing.
